International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) Research and Innovation Strategy Movenpick Hotel, Nairobi, Kenya. April 25 – 26, 2024
The 2013-2022 Strategy of the international Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) came to an end, and the institute through a set of processes developed a new Strategy for the period 2024-2030. This Strategy will position itself to harness unique opportunities presented by the evolving integrated CGIAR while also building on progress made and lessons learnt from the previous Strategy. The previous Strategy was informed by, and was deliberate in its attention to, challenges around sustainable intensification of livestock systems, the intersection of human and animal, livestock value chains, environment and climate change mitigation and adaptation. Going forward, ILRI seeks to build upon the achievements from its investments on interventions to address these major challenges. The new strategy will also highlight how ILRI is integrated into the CGIAR and supports the CGIAR Research and innovation strategy. The new strategy is being developed at two levels:
- A corporate strategy that provides an overall vision and mission and describes what ILRI must deliver (the strategic objectives) and how it will work (its critical success factors).
- A science (research and innovation) Strategy that will respond to current challenges and complement and link to other CGIAR science-focused strategies such as livestock-based systems and animal source foods strategies.
ECI-Africa supported the finalizing of the research and innovation Strategy, building on progress made so far, and ensuring that it incorporates the collective perspectives and ownership of ILRI staff who will drive its implementation. This was done through a series of processes including a consultation meeting of staff on April 25th and 26th.
