L4Ag High-Level Side Event on Dakar 2 at the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit Kenyatta International Conference Centre, Nairobi, Kenya. May 7, 2024
Leadership for Agriculture (L4Ag) is an African ministerial-level peer-to-peer learning platform led by the African Development Bank (AfDB), together with other steering committee members – Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and the Rockefeller Foundation as the main financier, and with Emerge Centre for Innovations-Africa (ECI-Africa) as the process facilitator.
The AfDB leads a continental process kickstarted at the high-level summit on Feed Africa, held in Dakar, Senegal, in January 25-27, 2023 (Dakar 2), aimed at mobilizing political, financial and technical support for strategic agricultural transformation on the continent at scale. Dakar 2 is part of the Bank’s Feed Africa Strategy (2016-2025) that seeks to transform Africa’s agriculture into a competitive, inclusive, and private sector agribusiness-oriented sector that provides food and nutrition security for Africans, creates economic opportunities, and improves livelihoods for rural African communities.
The L4AG event was held on the sidelines of the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health (AFSH) summit hosted by the Government of Kenya in May 2024. This event presented a global high-level opportunity to take stock of the progress, challenges, and opportunities towards achieving the targets of Dakar 2. The objectives of the event were to provide an update from selected member countries, share lessons, opportunities, and challenges experienced in accelerating African food systems transformation in line with Dakar 2 goals; discuss policy and governance frameworks around fertilizer and soil health and incentive schemes for developing and implementing soil health action plans for countries to accelerate their productivity enhancement programs and interventions. The event brought together representatives from Governments, development agencies and private sector actors and was facilitated by ECI-Africa.
