Regenerative Agriculture and Agroecology in Kenya Workshop. Current status and priorities driving agricultural transformation in Kenya Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi, Kenya. July 22– 24, 2024
The workshop on Regenerative Agriculture (RA) and Agroecology (AE) in Kenya, convened experts and key food systems stakeholders who are working to advance sustainable agricultural practices from across the RA/AE sectors in the East African region. The workshop aimed to understand the local needs and opportunities for food systems transformation in Kenya, and to build on a common understanding of how these approaches can effectively enhance the sustainability and efficiency of food systems, and address challenges including climate risks and limited access to resources, markets, and technical knowledge with a focus on creating an enabling environment that fosters sustainable agroecological practices.
The workshop’s objective was to understand the current state and key actors in regenerative agriculture in Kenya, identify country-specific needs and opportunities, support the movement towards sustainable agricultural systems, and gather feedback to guide Regen10’s future strategy and governance. The workshop was designed and facilitated by ECI-Africa. Deliberations were highly participatory, involving diverse stakeholders who actively contributed through structured sessions, group discussions, panel sessions, and exhibitions of RA/AE innovations and projects. At the end of the workshop, priority areas of intervention were identified and an Interim Steering Committee. This committee was mandated to establish a distinct identity for the initiative, map out existing similar entities across Kenya, and develop engagement mechanisms with key stakeholders at both sub-national and national levels. The team requested ECI-Africa’s stewardship and coordination in advancing the discussions and decisions from the workshop.
